George Russell won his 2nd F1 race of his career and his first of the 2024 season at the Austrian F1 Grand Prix today. He started from P3 and won on the Red Bull Ring for the first time. The Red Bull Racing team scored their 101st F1 race win.

Thrilling Austrian Grand Prix Sees George Russell Clinch Victory Amidst High Drama

The 2024 Austrian Grand Prix delivered an electrifying spectacle at the Red Bull Ring, with unexpected twists and intense battles shaping one of the season's most memorable races. George Russell emerged victorious, claiming his second career Grand Prix win, while Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz completed the podium in a dramatic turn of events.

Russell's Triumph Amidst Chaos

George Russell's win marked Mercedes' first victory since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, as he capitalized on a fierce battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. The defining moment came on Lap 64 when Verstappen and Norris collided at Turn 3, resulting in punctures for both drivers. Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for the incident, finishing fifth, while Norris was forced to retire.

"It's incredible. Holding onto P3 at the start was tough, but I saw Max and Lando battling hard. We knew we had to be there to pick up the pieces, and that's exactly what we did," Russell said.

Piastri and Sainz Shine

Oscar Piastri secured his fourth F1 podium with a second-place finish, expressing mixed emotions. "It's great to be on the podium again, but being so close to a win hurts a little. Still, these are valuable points for us," Piastri commented.

Carlos Sainz managed a third-place finish for Ferrari, acknowledging the race's intensity. "It was eventful up front. We tried to keep up with George, but his pace was strong today. In the end, P3 is a good result for us."

Verstappen vs. Norris: A Battle for the Ages

The race's highlight was the epic duel between Verstappen and Norris. The two drivers exchanged the lead multiple times, with tensions peaking on Lap 64. Verstappen, initially leading, was overtaken by Norris, who subsequently ran wide off the track. The Red Bull driver retook the lead, but their clash soon after resulted in significant damage and penalties.

Verstappen expressed his frustration over the penalty, labeling it "ridiculous," while his team principal, Christian Horner, called it "desperately unlucky."

The Race Unfolds

From the start, Verstappen maintained his pole position lead, with Norris and Russell close behind. Early incidents saw Charles Leclerc suffer front wing damage and Lewis Hamilton making his way up the field after a pit stop penalty.

A slow pit stop for Verstappen on Lap 51 allowed Norris to close the gap, setting the stage for their eventual clash. The ensuing chaos allowed Russell to take the lead, which he held onto until the end, crossing the finish line with Piastri and Sainz in tow.

Nico Hulkenberg secured sixth place for Haas after a late-race battle with Sergio Perez, bringing valuable points to the American team.

Looking Ahead to Silverstone

As the dust settles on the Austrian Grand Prix, the F1 circus moves to Silverstone for the next race in this triple-header. Fans can look forward to another exciting weekend of racing, with practice sessions kicking off on Friday, July 5, and the British Grand Prix set for Sunday, July 7.

I'm betting that Lando cried himself to sleep on Sunday night what with losing the fight with Max, damaging his car, losing good points & worst of all giving Gr the win, "I'm a Gr fan" so I was chuffed., perhaps Lando should weigh up the pros & cons before tangling with Max like a pesky "wasp" asking to be squat, after all it's not like he doesn't know what Max is capable of is it.

Stella from McLaren talking about trabsgressions for Max in 2021 that if a car is forced to retire there needs to be greater penalty, but I notice he didn't say anything anout Hamilton knocking Max off the track at Silverstone into the barrier at speed.
10 second penalty for Hamilton only.
Is that because McLaren is an engine customer of Merc.
What about Norris exceeding the track limit multiple times , did that allow him to get within DRS.And how artificial is the racing wheh DRS is available to pass.

Norris damaged his car, not MV. He should have parked it but stupidly decided to scurry back to the pit. The culture under Zak Brown is embarrassing, whining, complaining, blaming. Pitiful!

Following a number of years of calculated and mature driving, the impulsive Max of the past has returned! If he'd allowed Lando into the lead, instead of punting him off, Max would have finished no worse than second and achieved more points! A bit impetuous of Max. He didn't think of the consequences, only desperate for the win, as the red mist arrived to cloud his thinking.
Silverstone will make very interesting viewing! First win for Oscar?

No,Max's action was very deliberate. It was a deliberate strategy to warn all drivers that attempting to overtake him will have consequences.
He doesn't care about points lost. This was an investment in the future.
Max is very deliberate and strategic.
He needs bigger consequences to stop him.

Overall, a decently exciting race, although once again, Max stops being able to race fully cleanly when he has close challenges from another team or driver.
He should've simply kept the car fully straight or turned right more sharply to avoid contact.
George's luck, but even luck needs to be earned.
Too little too late for Oscar & the brief VSC didn't help matters, but I'm sure he'll get his maiden victory eventually.
Logan was again the only driver to get lapped twice by the eventual winner, even if an early pit stop was a big contributor this time around.
Checo's failure to overtake a Haas despite a considerable combined car+tyre advantage (even with the sidepod damage) is simply embarrassing.

Why did Norris never try to pass Max on the straight, he always seemed to attack on the bends & when he did he dive bombed Max like a kamikaze stuka, I couldn't believe what I was seeing,, no wonder it was messy,, good though.

I swear Ive never heard a driver advocate for another driver to be handed a penalty as much as Norris did to Max yesterday, his whining about an unsafe release in the pit lane was ridiculous and obviously BS. No respect for Norris he wanted the race given to him. He could have avoided the contact with Max but he chose to keep his line instead of moving and living to fight the next corner. Bonsai Lando needs to get up on the wheel instead of the radio button.

A racing disaster for sure. Lando is a good driver for sure but complains and whines a lot. He has become quite the agressor which is fine, young and ambitious but needs to be a bit more track savvy. Going over track limits 5 times shows that. Max is an aggressive driver as well, incredibly intelligent driver but still human. Horrible pit stop, tires not performing was just enough to bring him down to human level. He did make a mistake as well as Norris but all this hyperbole over racing is totally unjustfied. Not that long ago, Sir Lucille, a “clean” driver clipped MV into a wall at high speed, hitting the wall at 51gs, and everyone thought a 10 second penalty was just fine ,and celebrated his win without hesitation. Guess it all depends who is the driver.

Lando voted DOD was a joke and shows how stupid and biased people really are. Last week he started on pole and lost positions on track and got voted DOD. DOD has no credibility anymore.

For this is about the Media and Sky and selling stories (which is what makes money right), Ok , We had Lady Lou, the British Hero , Skys in bed lover who even donate money to her schemes, So her light is faded/jaded, outed as the pain in the *rse that she is, Now F1 , Sky ,Britain-maybe the world has New Heroes, Norris, King George and one tenth Brit Pastry boy to fill the web pages, Hate the winners and talk crap, thats the medias job

Silverstones story , Laura gets punted off by Lando, come onnnnn it could happen

Since when did hard racing become such an issue? All competitive drivers put “their elbows” out. What’s next, every driver receives a participation trophy? Even the great GOAT, LH, drove with his elbows out Silverstone 2021, as well as other races, LH slammed MV, into a wall, put him in the hospital without a care in the world. Destroyed the car, a 10 penalty and champagne corks flying everywhere.
Maybe carousel racing should be considered.
