Hamilton Clinches Historic Ninth Win at Thrilling 2024 British Grand Prix
The twelfth round of the 2024 Formula 1 season at Silverstone delivered a breathtaking race, culminating in a historic ninth British Grand Prix victory for Lewis Hamilton. This victory, his first since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, was laden with drama, strategic masterstrokes, and emotional farewells.
A Nail-Biting Finish
Hamilton, driving for Mercedes, exhibited stellar skill and tenacity to outpace Max Verstappen of Red Bull and McLaren's Lando Norris, who finished second and third respectively. The British driver's win was sealed after a series of strategic tire changes and intense on-track battles, particularly during the race's final laps.
Key Moments of the Race
Pole Sitter’s Misfortune: The race saw an early heartbreak for pole sitter George Russell, who was forced to retire on lap 35 due to a suspected water system issue. This unexpected turn of events shifted the dynamics at the front, paving the way for Hamilton's charge.
Strategic Prowess: The race was a masterclass in strategy. Hamilton and Verstappen both made crucial decisions to switch between slicks and intermediates as rain affected the track conditions intermittently. Verstappen's final switch to hard tires proved beneficial, securing his second-place finish despite an early struggle for pace.
Hamilton's Final British GP with Mercedes: This victory was particularly poignant for Hamilton, marking his last British Grand Prix with Mercedes before his move to Ferrari next season. Over the team radio, Hamilton expressed deep gratitude and emotion, highlighting the significance of this win for himself and his team.
Quotes from the Podium
Lewis Hamilton: "I can't stop crying! Since 2021, every day has been about fighting, training, and working with this amazing team. Winning this last British GP with Mercedes means everything. I am forever grateful to everyone in this team, Mercedes, our partners, and our incredible fans."
Max Verstappen: "We didn't have the pace today, but we made the right calls on tires. The decision to go with hard tires at the end helped us finish second. It's a podium finish, and I'm happy with that considering how the race started."
Lando Norris: "Congrats to Lewis. His decision at the end was crucial. It was tough out there, but enjoyable. We had some letdowns as a team, but I'm happy to be on the podium at home."
Notable Performances
The race wasn't just about the top three. Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth, scoring vital points for Haas, while Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso secured P7 and P8 respectively, marking a return to form for the team. Williams' Alex Albon overcame early damage to finish ninth, with AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda rounding out the points in tenth.
Final Classification and Future Prospects
Hamilton's win was a testament to his resilience and the strategic acumen of the Mercedes team. With half the season still to go, the battle for the championship remains fiercely contested. The Silverstone race showcased the unpredictable nature of F1, where strategy, skill, and a bit of luck can turn the tide.
As the teams pack up and look forward to the next round, fans and drivers alike will remember the 2024 British Grand Prix as a race that exemplified the spirit and excitement of Formula 1.

Congrates to Hammy, but McLaren really screwed this one up! They had two contenders to win the race but pitted to late with Norris and gave him the wrong tyres!
Spot-on regarding Mclaren's strategic choices, not to mention not doing a double stack like Mercedes, cost them a 1-2 chance.
Maybe Brown should attend to his own business. I couldn’t be happier for Merc. Hope they have extraordinary races for the rest of the season, right up until Sir Hammy goes to Ferrari
Well said Susan
Hahaha, when you point your finger to someone else and look at your hand, you will see there are three fingers point at you...
The victory drought finally ended, but some strategic blunders by McLaren & consequently a lost 1-2 chance, with the victory ultimately going away via the soft choice over an entire unused medium.
What a race by Checo & Charles.
Hulk is my DOTD again, & also a decent race for Aston, Alex, & Yuki.
Gutted for the new King, but Big picture Max is now 973 points clear eyes on the prize, eyes on the prize, quite an exciting race overall
Ferrari wrong strategy, Mcl wrong strategy, Merc reliability issues
With Max Rb called it exactly right, So Red Bull must be really worried....lol
This season reminds me so much of 2009 , where Braun hammered the opposition in the 1st half , then just played the game in the 2nd half, picking up the best results for the championship as they went along
Good job LH didn’t retire eh Stroppo two more records and at his age to. A masterclass from the GOAT. All the drivers seemed to be keeping things clean, even Max practically waving people past! What a great race.
Just remind me of how many passes made and how many laps led
Irrelevant, tell me who won if you can make your finger type it, get Susan to help you.🤭🤣😊😌😋
Went pass Russell.
Good thing for Hammy there wasn't 1 or 2 more laps, instead of pulling within 145 points of Max ( a 5 race deficit still ) he'd be 152 points behind now because Max would have went by nose ring so fast he would've looked like he was painted on the track.
I believe a point well made , which none seems to even be thinking about , , its all how great Lucy was winning the race, another record blah blah when infact, as you rightly say, had it been two laps longer , a completely different result, Merc know that and Rb know that , another reason why Rb arent bothered, two tenths in quali, made up 2 places, and finished 2 seconds behind a girl, Sorry, who was the winner again?
Rubbish, lead drivers reign it in inside the last few laps. Might as well say good thing for Hammy it didn't snow.
Suck it up LH haters.
If Max was that fast how come he was still behind at the end? Good to see Max congratulate Lewis at the end.
With the sun a golden glow as it sets below the western horizon, Lucy bounds onto the podium, shaking with anticipation to clutch the Winner's trophy for the British GP. After the awards ceremony, and a short helo flight to his Wonderland compound, Lucy, inward looking as
always, wonders if that will be his final, his penultimate win. As he strides purposefully to the dining hall, he catches a glimpse of himself in the full-length mirror. His whispered "You ARE the GOAT..." is nearly drowned out by the swish of his full-length gown and ermine lined train.
