After 9 years F1 returned to Istanbul Park in Turkey to drive the first practice for the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. The circuit is remembered by it's notorious turn 9, where the F1 cars pull over 5G while acceleration on full throttle. This year it will be interesting to see if the high downforce cars can hit 6G.
The track has been resurfaced by a new tarmac and was cleaned very thorough. It even was still a bit wet this morning when the cars did their first laps. Valtteri Bottas was the first to clock a lap time in the Mercedes with a 1:48.426 min.
All drivers had to fight a lot to not spin of the circuit. Carlos Sainz had a very different fight. He had to retire the McLaren with a technical problem halfway the session.
The lap record is a 1:24.770 min set by Juan Pablo Montoya in the McLaren MP4-20 back in 2005.
