Pierre Gasly was the Red Bull driver today that drove the quickest lap time during the first practice for the 70th British Grand Prix. He was a lot faster than his Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen.

Dark clouds were hanging above the newly surfaced Silverstone circuit in Northampton. The track is a lot less bumpy because of the new tarmac. The weather is set to be cloudy with the possibility of patchy showers throughout Friday.

15 minutes into the session home Grand Prix favourite Lewis Hamilton joined the session in the Mercedes. He was cheered by the local British F1 fans when he was spotted in the garage.

A lot happened in this first practice for the 70th British Grand Prix. The new tarmac was quite slippery and caused a lot of spins. Romain Grosjean had a shameful moment when he spun the Haas coming out of the pitlane exit and demolished the front wing on the VF-19.

George Russel spun the Williams coming into Luffield and had to drive through the grass to go on. Half an hour into the session Lando Norris spun his McLaren MCL34 coming out of the last corner Club before the finish.

With 51 minutes the go Kimi Raikkonen's Alfa Romeo broke down at Luffield corner and caused a red flag period of almost 10 minutes. After the red session was ended Grosjean gone out to get his first lap time on the board and also spun at Luffield.

With 30 minutes to go it started to rain around the old airport that's turned into a race track a long time ago. Bottas was one of the drivers who was send out on intermediate tyres to try a wet setup. The rain didn't last for long and all drivers run slick tyres again.

Gasly set his lap time at the end of the session. Both Mercedes drivers were topping the timesheet almost the whole session.

Last years quickest lap time in FP1 was 1:27.487 min driven by Lewis Hamilton in the W09.
