Lando Norris again drove the McLaren of Fernando Alonso in FP1 to get experience for next season. He was the first to go out on the 2.200 meters high track.
Charles Leclerc also skips FP1, because Antonio Giovinazzi is driving his car. Giovinazzi will be driving for Sauber in 2019. Force India also swap Esteban Ocon for Nicholas Latifi for this first practice of the Mexican GP.
The winner of the last GP in Austin, Kimi Raikkonen was the first to drive a lap time. he drove a 1:19.798. Ferrari was testing a new floor on the SF71H. Sebastian Vettel as driving around with the old and Raikkonen with the new floor.
Pierre Gasly had a problem with the Honda power unit in his Toro Rosso and wasn't able to set a lap time.
Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo showed they are the drivers to beat this weekend. The Red Bul RB14 showed it's speed in thin air, were mechanical grip and downforce are most important to be quick. Verstappen beat the FP1 time of last year by more than a second and almost touched the lap record, driven in the race last year..
All drivers that used the Hypersoft tyres were complaining about the tyres that already fell apart after 11 laps.
The quickest lap time driven in last years 2017 FP1 was 1:17.824 set by Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes W08.
