Kimi Raikkonen was the first driver this 2019 F1 season who got out in the Alfa Romeo to get some slippery Albert Park track time. After 20 minutes in the session it was Valtteri Bottas who recorded the first lap time of the season and this FP1 session. The first lap time by the Finn was a 1:26.454. A few laps later he improved to 1:24.679 min in the yellow medium Pirelli tyres. After half an hour all drivers except Nico Hulkenberg set their first lap times for 2019.

In the second stint (after 1 hour) we saw a lot of cars were fitted with the red soft tyres and Valtteri Bottas again clocked the quickest lap time. He drove a 1:23.866 min. A few moments later his| team mate Lewis Hamilton stepped on the gas and clocked the quickest lap time of the session: 1:23.599 min.

The official race lap record of 1:24,125 min is set back in 2004 by Michael Schumacher. Last seasons quickest lap time of 1:24.026 was driven by Lewis Hamilton with the Mercedes.

The top 3 teams Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull at last showed their real pace and seems to be very close. With 24 minutes to go, the top 5 was only 0.267 sec. apart! Hamilton & Vettel were only

With 22 minutes to go it was 2019 rookie Alexander Albon who had the honour to cause the first red flag situation this season. The Thai driver lost control of the Toro Rosso STR14, slammed into the barrier with his front and back wing. He even lost his front wing, but was able to drive to the pitlane for damage repairs.

With 18 minutes to go the Renault RS19 with Nico Hulkenberg was at last ready to start the first practice for Sunday's Australian GP. Hulkenberg's first lap around Albert Park was quicker right away than his fresh team mates Daniel Ricciardo. Kimi Raikkonen had an encouraging first session by being 6th quickest in the Alfa Romeo.

At the end of the session Daniel Kvyat was complaining about a vibration in his rear right tyre and came in to investigate the problem. Both Williams drivers seem to have a lot of catching up to do. Robert Kubica and George Russel are over 4 seconds slower than Hamilton in the |Mercedes W10.
