The curbstones have done quite a bit of damage. Nico Hülkenberg will stay inside for a while.

Toro Rosso (Alex Albon) 1.07.019  on soft and Haas (Romain Grosjean 1.07.402  & Kevin Magnussen 1.07.321) both on medium tyres. Many drivers suffer from the curb stones. Mercedes also has little grip on the asphalt. Hamilton and Bottas go to P2 and P4 respectively. Charles Leclerc goes straight to P1 with 1.05.558, half a second under the time of the McLaren. Pierre Gasly visits the gravel. The Frenchman is just a little too fast in Schlossgold and has to go straight on to get back on the track at the bottom of the hill. Again McLaren shows that he has found his way up. The racing team from Woking is also the fastest midfield team here and now.

Problems for Verstappen! End of exercise for the Dutchman. His right rear tire is loose and half of his rear wing is missing. That must have been a hard blow at the wall between turns nine and ten. Time out FP2 for 2 minutes. Meanwhile, they are also busy at McLaren repairing the damage to Sainz's floor. A lot happened the second red flag is waved. Another top team with a broken car. This time Valtteri Bottas flying in the wall. The Finnish Mercedes driver loses control at the rear the moment he wants to accelerate and shoots straight over the gravel at turn five. He comes to a hard stop and damages his car considerably. Bottas must be sent to the medical team present. The impact of the collision with the wall seemed to have been 25G.Sebastian Vettel takes off at the same place as Verstappen, but manages to dodge the wall. He comes to a halt perhaps two meters away, but can drive in again with his broken soft tires.

The teams switched to long runs in the last fifteen minutes. At Mercedes and Red Bull they logically only have data from one car this session. It certainly gives Pierre Gasly a somewhat larger role within the team on this Friday. Light touché between Antonio Giovinazzi and Charles Leclerc. The two touched each other when entering corner three, Leclerc on the inside. It has no consequences, but was awkward from the unwary Italian. Charles Leclerc is the fastest man of the second session!

One F1 fan comment on “Lap Times 2nd Free Practice 2019 Austrian F1 GP

  1. O Sitnai

Renault technical staff were promising before this season some significant improvement in their racing car. And the result is a miserable overall performance of the car, see the systematic slow times of their of faster cars drivers. Ricardo, one of the best drivers in the whole bunch of drivers, must do risky passing in difficult turns just to keep 7-9 position at the end. What an embarrassment for the Renault glory of the past. Not enough money or the ability, or both?
