Brendon Hartley was the first to record a lap time in Q1 of the 2018 Italian F1 GP in the Toro Rosso. Vettel drove the quickest lap time in Q1. His Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen was 2nd fastest.
Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen both drove the same lap time in Q1. Williams performed a lot better than normal this season and both drivers made it to Q2 at last. Romain Grosjean pushed out Sergio Pérez in Q1 by only 0.001 sec. Charles Leclerc also was pushed out by Grosjean with only 0.002 sec difference.
In Q2 both Haas driver went out as first to try to make it to Q3. Vettel and Hamilton already went head to head. Vettel was again fastest. But the Mercedes of Hamilton was also very quick. The gap to Vettel after the first stint was only 0.013 sec. Vettel drove a 1:19.785 min in Q2. With this time he already broke the quali record on Monza. The fastest pole time before the current Monza layout was 1:20.089 and set by Rubens Barrichello back in 2004.
Vettel even improved his time in his 2nd stint to 1:19.629 min. Max Verstappen also did a very good job by beating Bottas in the Mercedes for P4 in the Red Bull.
In Q3 Vettel drove out of the garage as first. But in the first stint Hamilton was fasest in the Mercedes with an even faster lap time of 1:19.390 min. It was Raikkonen who scored pole. His last pole was last year in Monaco. He also broke the pole record of Monza with his 1:19.119 min. The old pole record wasn't beaten for 14 years.
Big surprise this quali was Lance Stroll in the Williams, who made it to Q3 and P10.
