Valtteri Bottas will start from pole position for tomorrows 2018 Russian Grand Prix. Bottas scored his 2nd pole position of the 2018 season. It was his 6th pole of his F1 career and the 97th pole position for his Mercedes F1 team.
In Q1 both Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas took the lead.
Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo made it to Q2, but because of the applied grid penalties it would be pointless to set a lap time in the second qualifying session.
Because those 3 cars did not record a lap time, Renault drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz also choose to not set a lap time in Q2. When you don't make it to Q3, you are allowed to choose the tyre compound to start the race on.
All top 4 cars (Ferrari & Mercedes) in Q2 drove their quickest lap on the Ultrasoft tyres and will start the race on that tyre compound tomorrow.
In the first stint of Q3 Valtteri Bottas took P1 with a time of 1:31.528 min and broke the qualifying record of last year, which was 1:33.194 min. Hamilton was only 0.004 sec slower.
In the second stint Valtteri Bottas even drove faster and improved his lap time to 1:31.387 min.
