Lewis Hamilton won the 66th Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix today. The Mercedes driver scored his 77th Formula 1 race win and the 93rd victory for Mercedes.
The start of the race was clean. Max Verstappen who was on P3 had a better start than Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes on P2. In turn one Verstappen was alongside him but didn't pass him.
After 8 laps Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc was already on P12. The Monegasque who was driving his first home grand prix for Ferrari started on P15. One lap later he almost crashed when he tried the same move on Nico Hulkenberg's Renault. He almost got him, but hit the barrier with his right rear tyre that caused a puncture. Leclerc had to pit for new tyres, but drove much to fast. The tyre disintegrated and damaged the back of his car that caused a lot of debris on the track and a safety car to pick up the pieces on the track.
Almost all cars went into the pits to get a free pitstop. The Red Bull Racing team made a very quick pitstop on Max Verstappen's car who could pass Valtteri Bottas for P2. They did collide in the pit lane but both could continue.
In lap 16 a few drivers collided in Tabac. Antonio Giovinazzi in the Alfa Romeo tried to pass the Williams of Robert Kubica. Giovinazzi hit the back of Kubica and caused him to spin.
In lap 18 Leclerc retired his Ferrari SF90 because his car was damaged to much because he drove to fast with his puncture.
In lap 23 Verstappen received a 5 second time penalty for the unsafe release after his first pitstop when he collided with Bottas for P2. Hamilton got the message that in 5 minutes the slight change of rain was expected.
Carlos Sainz reported on the radio to his McLaren team that it started to rain in lap 29. The rain wasn't heavy enough to go in for intermediate tyres. Until lap 47 he few drivers didn't do their pitstop.
In lap 48 Lance Troll also received a 5 seconds penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. The backmarkers on the Monaco street track always are difficult to pass. Hamilton was able to create a gap of over 1 second but Verstappen did close the gap again to 0.5 sec.
In lap 51 Hamilton told his team on the radio his left-front was dead and he was in deep trouble. His team told him that he can keep Verstappen behind on the tight Monaco track, but Hamilton was very stressed and was asking for miracle.
