2023 Australian F1 GP Report

It's always a surprise which tires the teams have chosen to start on. Of the top 10, almost all drivers started on the medium tires. Only Alpine driver Pierre Gasly was brave enough to start on the soft compound Pirelli tires.

Sergio Pérez decided to start from the pit lane. Max Verstappen didn't have a perfect start and was passed at turn 1 by Mercedes driver George Russell. At turn 3, Lewis Hamilton also passed him for P2. Behind him, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz had a good start and moved up to P4. His teammate behind eliminated himself when he turned in and hit Lance Stroll. The Ferrari driver spun off, and the SF-23 got beached in the gravel pit. A safety car was needed for three laps to recover the Ferrari.

Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo), Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), and Logan Sargeant (Williams) chose to do a pit stop and switch to the hard tires, aiming to drive to the finish on them.

At the restart, nothing changed in the race order. The top 3 was very close, and once the DRS was turned on again, Hamilton tried to overtake his teammate right away, but Russell defended and kept him behind.

Then in lap 7, another safety car was deployed when Alex Albon, who was running in a terrific 6th position, crashed the Williams at turn 6. Mercedes decided to pit race leader Russell to switch him to hard tires. Russell returned from the pits in P7.

The race was then stopped by a red flag because the track needed to be cleared of debris and gravel thrown on the track by Albon's crash. All drivers who hadn't done their pit stop could now get a new set of tires for free. The top 10 order now was: 1. Hamilton, 2. Verstappen, 3. Alonso, 4. Stroll, 5. Gasly, 6. Hulkenberg, 7. Russell, 8. Tsunoda, 9. Norris, 10. Piastri.

The race restarted with a standing start from the grid. The complete top 10 was now on hard tires. Hamilton held onto P1 as Verstappen had a poor start again. Alonso attempted to pass the Dutchman but couldn't make it stick at turn 1. Alpine driver Esteban Ocon and Nyck de Vries collided and got a bit airborne in turn 3, but were able to continue.

In lap 12, Verstappen flew by Hamilton for the lead, using the very effective DRS on the Red Bull RB19. Behind him, Russell was going quickly and had already climbed back to P4 by lap 14. Pérez, who started from the pits, had not yet moved up a lot and was in P15, having done three pit stops already.

Russell's afternoon got even worse in lap 18 when his Mercedes power unit gave up, and flames came out of the back of the W14. Russell parked his car at the pit lane exit, and a virtual safety car was used for one lap to recover the Mercedes.

Halfway through the race in lap 24, Verstappen was 4.4 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Alonso was 2.3 seconds behind his former teammate. Gasly was 4th (+1.7 seconds), Sainz was 5th (+0.5 seconds). Pérez was flying now and had moved up to P9 with a couple of brave moves at turn 10.

As the race developed, Pérez moved up to P7 with 10 laps to go, while his teammate Verstappen had a moment in the final corner as he ended up on the grass. Hamilton and Alonso still held P2 and P3 behind the race leader. Before Verstappen went onto the grass, his lead was over 10 seconds, but it shrunk to 7.5 seconds.

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen lost his focus in lap 54 coming out of turn 2 and hit the wall with his rear right wheel. The tire was ripped off, and his race ended prematurely. At first, a safety car was deployed to clean up the track again. But later on, race control decided to stop the race for the second time. The drivers were allowed to get a new set of tires, and the race was restarted for the third time.

The third restart for two laps was exciting. All drivers started on a set of soft tires. Verstappen now had a good getaway and kept the lead into turn 1. Hamilton followed the Dutchman. Behind him, carnage had started when Alonso got a hit on his rear right by Sainz and spun off to resume as last. Gasly and Pérez went wide; when they returned to the circuit, Gasly didn't see his teammate Ocon, and both ended up in the wall, causing another red flag! De Vries and Sargeant also had a moment in turn 1, and both ended up in the gravel pit, which also was the end of their race.

The order after the third restart was 1. Verstappen, 2. Hamilton, 3. Sainz, 4. Hülkenberg, 5. Tsunoda, 6. Norris, 7. Piastri, 8. Zhou, 9. Bottas, 10. Pérez, 11. Alonso, 12. Stroll.

Only 12 cars were able for the final restart. Race control decided to do the final restart behind the safety car. The race wasn't restarted for the fourth time from the grid and finished behind the safety car, but the order was changed back to the order of the third restart: 1. Verstappen, 2. Hamilton, 3. Alonso, 4. Sainz, 5. Stroll, 6. Pérez, 7. Norris, 8. Hülkenberg, 9. Piastri, 10. Zhou, 11. Tsunoda, 12. bottas.  Only Sainz received a five second penalty for hitting Alonso at the third restart and ended up deadlast.

The only necessary change is to never again red flag races for entertainment, but only ever for absolute necessity that’s unmanageable under SC & VSC.
Ridiculous choice with 4-5 laps left that ultimately backfired with the race still finishing under neutralization & lots of avoidable damage over mere two laps.

It was great entertainment! I say scrap that safety car and only use the red flag when a car needs to be recovered.

I found it a bizarre finish to the AGP. One lap, the final lap, under the safety car is absurd. Waste of time and money! The race should have been declared at the conclusion of 56 laps.
Whatever happened to the motor racing rule that required the race positions to revert to the previously completed lap?
What a debacle that they all sat around for such a long time trying to work out how to finish the race and who would start in which position! If it goes back to the previously completed lap, it is simple! FIA have made it too complex. They really make fools of themselves when nobody seems to be conversant with the regulations, including the competitors.

The right thing to do with Magnussen's DNF was to finish the race under SC with only four full laps left.
Race direction just can't get their act together.

2021 Abu Dhabi finish much better with last lap dash with Verstappen deservedly winning, because Merc drivers took him out in 2 races earlier in that season.
Should have just declared this race rather than farcical last lap under safety car

Fia is a joke go to bsb on how to run a race f1 is so boring because of rules it's not racing just a money pays for results contest

Rb/Honda have done such a good job that Max was clearly cruising and could have gone a lot faster as demonstrated by his speed when he passed Lewis but he needs Checo up there to keep him awake he made too many mistakes.
Was George fast before his troubles? He didn’t like being given the hurry up by Lewis. Alonso and Lewis still make the least mistakes but need a lot more speed.

He's saying that he can't even tell the difference between 2021 and 2022 and the only thing he sees is the color of that sportsman he refers to, and that nothing else is actuallly important.

Give him a couple of more weeks and he'll be telling you that Max and RB have found new ways of cheating and that Pretty Boy Russel has a special car because Merc secretly wants to get rid of that sportsman because he's too expensive and no longer reliable.

  6. f1award

It's the American way, I've said it before but SC and Red flags are just being used to bunch the field when a driver gets to far ahead. It's backfires when people begin to realise they are just watching a fixed entertainment.

More like a stock car race than a f1 Gp., a lot of teams will top their cost cap if they carry on like this. Grs car looked as though it had a jet engine in the back of it before it blew, unlucky, he was doing well.
