What happened on the second day of the 8 days winter test on Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona in Spain?
After yesterdays fine day of testing for Ferrari with Sebastian Vettel fastest and driving the most laps behind the wheel of the SF90, it was now the magical moment for 21 year old Ferrari debut Charles Leclerc to get behind the wheel and to show his driving skills.
The weather was fine and similar to yesterday, so it was interesting to see how close Leclerc could get to the quickest lap time of Vettel (1:18.161).
Who were testing the cars on this 2nd day of testing?
For Renault and Mercedes both drivers drove their laps again. Just like yesterday. Al lot of drivers had their debut drive today. We already told you that Leclerc was driving for Ferrari. Behind the wheel of the now Honda powered Red Bull was their new driver Pierre Gasly on his debut drive. Kevin Magnussen was getting his first taste of the beautiful black/gold/white Haas VF-19. Lando Norris was having his debut in the McLaren MCL34. Lance Stroll did his in the Racing Point RP19, Antonio Giovinazzi was driving for the first time in the C39 and Alexander Albon started his F1 career in the Toro Rosso STR14.
What happened during the 2nd day of F1 testing?
Just like yesterday it was McLaren who was the first to go out at 9:00 CET. Today with Lando Norris behind the MCL34. It wasn't long until the frist red flag stopped the session. At 9:03 CET it was rookie Albon who lost control of his Toro Rosso and ended up in the gravel trap.
For Mercedes it was Lewis Hamilton who kicked off the testing on this 2nd day. A lot of teams were calibrating their wind-tunnel calculations with the real world today. We saw a lot of aero racks being used today.
Williams again was the only team not testing. It's said that they are waiting on some parts that delay their testing. You can see a video about this matter here.
The Honda engines seems to perform very well on top speed as Kvyat and Verstappen were in the top 3 of that list yesterday.
Around 11 o'clock we saw the now Renault driver having a rear wing failure on the Renault RS19. He ended up in the gravel of turn 1 without top top element of his back wing. The Australian driver could get back to the pits on his own.
Just before the lunch we saw Alexander Albon spinning his Toro Rosso at the final chicane section. No harm was done and he could just go on.
In the afternoon everything was going smooth until Gasly lost control of his the RB15 in turn 13 and hit the barriers with is rear wing to end up in the gravel and cause a red flag situation. Not much else happened in the afternoon. Ferrari was again fastest like they were yesterday. Leclerc was only 0,086 sec. slower than his teammate Vettel.
