Aston Martin has been linked to Formula 1 only as a constructor, from a technical point of view, but it was also part of the sport as Red Bull Racing's sponsor from 2016 to 2020.
The brand had been part of the World Championship back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, taking part in 10 races between 1959 and 1960 with Roy Salvadori, Carroll Shelby, and Maurice Trintignant, although the team didn't score a single point in that span.
The team abandoned its Formula 1 project after its challengers, the DBR4 and DBR5 had proved to struggle mightily against the competition and looked outdated in terms of engine placement and other key aspects, such as weight.
The Aston Martin brand was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford in London, and although it doesn't have a rich Formula 1 history, the brand embarked in several racing series during its early decades.
Starting in the 1920s, the team rose to success in terms of Sportscars racing, winning the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans with Salvadori and Shelby behind the wheel of the DBR1, and Sir David Brown behind the wheel of the team's ownership.
The brand left Formula 1 after the 1960 British Grand Prix due to the poor results it was showing at the pinnacle of motorsport.
The brand made a return to Formula 1 as a Red Bull partner, both as a title sponsor and with a technical partnership, as described in Aston Martin's official website.
Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 as a constructor in 2021, replacing the previously-known Racing Point team, which had won a race in 2020 and showed strong results with Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll.
For Aston Martin's return, four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel joined the team from Ferrari, with Stroll (son of team owner Lawrence) completing the driver lineup.
"The return of the Aston Martin name to Formula 1™, set against such a colourful and dynamic history in the sport, is a genuinely exciting time for all of us involved with this great British sports car brand."
"The Formula 1™ grid is the right place for Aston Martin. It’s where this brand should be, and I know this next chapter of our racing history will be incredibly exciting for fans of Aston Martin, and the sport of F1™, all over the world."
Those were the words of executive chairman of Aston Martin, Lawrence Stroll, ahead of the team's return to Grand Prix racing in 2021.
The 2021 campaign wasn't easy for the team, as the results of the previously-known Racing Point could not be replicated with their new car, the AMR21.
The British racing green looked fantastically since the start of the 2021 Formula 1 season, but the results weren't there yet. In the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix, Vettel gave the team its first Top-5 finish in the season, with fifth place.
Lance Stroll had scored the brand's first F1 points in the first two races, finishing 10th and eighth at Bahrain and Imola.
Vettel then gave Aston Martin its first F1 podium with a brilliant second-place in the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The team went on to finish seventh in the World Constructors' Championship in 2021, with 77 points.
Their 2022 challenger, the AMR22, wasn't as competitive as the team hoped. The new aerodynamic regulations could've put Aston Martin on the right track from 2022 on, but the team's best result through the first half of 2022 was Vettel finishing sixth at Azerbaijan.
Vettel announced his intentions to retire from Formula 1 racing at the end of the 2022 season on 28 July 2022, before the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Given the news of the German's retirement, the team announced two-time champion Fernando Alonso as Stroll's partner from 2023 on, securing another multiple F1 World Champion in Aston Martin's ranks in the following seasons.
Although Lance Stroll missed Pre-Season testing due to injuries suffered from a minor bicycle accident, Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin looked set to compete for big results to start 2023, given a huge leap in performance taken by the team's new challenger, the AMR23.
Alonso qualified fifth on Saturday and then took third place in the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, giving Aston Martin its second F1 podium and the second-best result for the team in its history. It was also Alonso's 99th F1 podium and an incredible start to his Aston Martin career.
Moreover, Stroll fought well through his injuries to finish sixth in the event.
In the second race of 2023, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Alonso started on the front row and finished third behind another 1-2 for Red Bull.
The podium was the third in Aston Martin's F1 history and the 100th in Alonso's championship-winning career. Initially, Alonso had been demoted to fourth due to an alleged infraction while serving a five-time penalty in the pits. However, the penalty was ultimately eliminated.
Solid pace and a bit of luck gave the team another podium in the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, and a 3-4 result. It was the third consecutive for Alonso and the squad scored 27 points with Lance Stroll's P4 reached in the late stages of a chaotic race.
In the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, Alonso achieved a fourth podium in five Grands Prix in the 2023 F1 season.
The third-place finish at Miami was the team's fifth podium in its F1 history.
Alonso gave the team its sixth podium in F1 and the first in Monaco with a solid second-place outing in the 2023 Monaco GP. The result matched the team's best-ever result in Formula 1 and the Spanish racer had also been close to achieving the team's first Pole Position during qualifying for the Monaco round.
Alonso gave the team another podium with second place in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, which was Aston Martin's seventh podium in its F1 history and the sixth in 2023.
The team struggled after the podium in Canada, but consistently scored points to secure a Top-5 finish in the World Constructors' Championship. Moreover, Alonso scored two other podiums with second-place finishes in the Netherlands and Brazil rounds.
The Brazil podium was spectacular, with the Spanish driver beating Red Bull's Sergio Pérez for third place in the race.
Th team finished fifth in the WCC with 280 points (206 points for fourth-placed Alonso and 74 for 10th-placed Stroll).
