# Bargeboard

**Bargeboards were the exquisite, filigreed vanes between the front wheels and the sidepod of every F1 car for nearly three decades.** They shaped the airflow travelling down the side of the chassis, protected the sidepods from front-tyre wake, and became one of the most artfully engineered surfaces on a Grand Prix car. The 2022 aerodynamic regulations wiped them out in a single stroke, because the outwash they created was the biggest single cause of dirty air behind the car ahead.
## What is a bargeboard?
A bargeboard is a vertically oriented aerodynamic vane mounted along the side of an F1 car, between the front wheels and the sidepod inlets. Its job was to control the vortices shed by the rotating front tyres and by the front wing, keeping the sidepod inlets fed with clean air, protecting the underfloor and helping the diffuser at the back of the car do its work.
## Origin: McLaren MP4/8, 1993
McLaren introduced the modern bargeboard on the MP4/8 at the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. The original panels were simple curved shields designed to keep front-tyre wake out of the radiator inlets. Within a year [Benetton](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/benetton-f1-team-information-statistics/) and Jordan were running similar concepts, and by the end of the 1990s bargeboards were standard equipment on every car on the grid.
## How bargeboards worked
By the time the 2010s ground-effect ban had matured into the wing-led era, bargeboards were multi-element sculptures with vertical fins, slats and turning vanes stacked in a single ensemble. Some elements pulled airflow inboard to sit against the sidepods, others pushed it outboard to move dirty air away from the floor. The upper elements typically produced downwash to load the diffuser, while lower elements generated local downforce of their own. A well-designed bargeboard could account for tens of downforce counts across a lap.
## Why the 2022 regulations banned bargeboards
The bargeboard was the single largest generator of **outwash**, the sideways-and-outward airflow pattern that made F1 cars so aerodynamically disruptive to anything trying to follow them. When the FIA and Formula 1 rebuilt the technical regulations for 2022 around ground effect and clean-air racing, bargeboards were removed. Downforce moved to the floor, sidepods were reshaped to accept airflow more naturally, and the space between front wheel and sidepod was left largely empty.
## What replaced the bargeboard?
The current generation of cars uses a simplified pair of side-of-chassis vanes, sometimes called **front floor fences** or **chassis bib fences**, that manage the airflow feeding the Venturi tunnels. They are functionally cousins of the old bargeboard but subject to much stricter geometric limits, and their outwash effect is dramatically reduced.
