Control Electronics is the collective term for all the electronic hardware and software that controls a modern F1 power unit. It includes the FIA-standard ECU built by McLaren Applied Technologies, the inverter hardware that manages current flow to and from the Energy Store, the control units that operate the MGU-K and MGU-H, and the wiring looms that connect everything. In FIA parlance CE is a homologated element that must be declared at the start of the season and cannot be replaced without a penalty. ## Why the FIA categorises CE separately - modern power-unit performance depends heavily on control code and inverter hardware; - changing the control electronics is a common way to fix reliability issues or bugs; - without a homologated element count, teams could swap out electronics endlessly and change performance; - the CE limit forces manufacturers to run reliable hardware and validated software from race one. ## What CE contains The specific hardware inside the CE bucket includes the standardised TAG-320 ECU (or its successor), the inverter for high-voltage energy management, the MGU-K and MGU-H control units, DC-DC converters that feed low-voltage systems, and the wiring looms connecting them all. Software layered on top of that hardware also counts, meaning that even a software update requires FIA sign-off. ## CE and grid penalties Any change of a CE element beyond the season allowance triggers a grid penalty in the same way as an engine change. Teams therefore treat CE reliability as seriously as ICE reliability, and factory validation of every software update runs through rigorous test benches before it goes to a race weekend. ## Frequently asked questions about Control Electronics ### What does CE stand for in F1?
