# Chassis
The monocoque is the chassis, the survival cell and the mounting point for everything else on the car.
**The chassis is the structural heart of a Formula 1 car, the carbon-fibre monocoque that carries the driver, engine, suspension and every aerodynamic surface.** It is also the survival cell, engineered to withstand the enormous energy of a modern F1 impact. Every other component on the car is bolted, hung or plumbed onto the chassis, and the [FIA](https://www.fia.com/) homologates it separately from the aerodynamic package.
## What is the chassis in Formula 1?
In F1 the word "chassis" refers to the **monocoque survival cell**: the carbon-fibre composite tub that forms the cockpit and the central structure of the car. Front and rear crash structures, the roll hoop, the halo and the front and side impact structures are all bonded or bolted to it. In the paddock the same word is often used loosely to mean "the whole car excluding the engine", because the chassis defines what everything else attaches to.
## How an F1 chassis is built
Modern F1 chassis are laid up from prepreg carbon-fibre sheets around an aluminium honeycomb core, layer by layer, and cured in autoclaves at high temperature and pressure. A single monocoque contains thousands of individually placed plies. The finished structure is extraordinarily light and rigid: around 30 to 35 kg for a modern F1 tub, yet able to survive impacts that would flatten a road car.
## The FIA crash tests
Before the season starts, every new chassis must pass a series of static and dynamic FIA **homologation tests**. The programme includes:
- front impact test on the nose crash structure;
- rear impact test on the gearbox and rear crash structure;
- side impact tests on the survival cell;
- roll hoop and halo static load tests;
- chassis squeeze tests along the cockpit sides.
Only after all tests are passed is the chassis type approved for racing. A team that damages a monocoque beyond repair during the season must submit a replacement of the same specification, and any modification to the tub requires FIA sign-off.
## Chassis and aero: two different homologations
Since the introduction of the current regulations, teams operate under a distinction between chassis-level parts, which are frozen once homologated, and aerodynamic parts, which can be developed within the wind-tunnel and CFD allowances. Suspension geometry, monocoque shape and gearbox case are chassis items. Wings, floors and bodywork are aerodynamic items.

### What is the chassis in Formula 1?
The chassis is the carbon-fibre monocoque that forms the survival cell of an F1 car. It carries the driver, houses the fuel cell and integrates the front and side crash structures.
### What is a monocoque?
A monocoque is a single-piece structural shell that carries loads through its skin rather than through a separate frame. In F1 it is made from carbon fibre and aluminium honeycomb and forms both the chassis and the survival cell.
### How light is an F1 chassis?
A modern F1 monocoque weighs around 30 to 35 kg on its own, before crash structures and suspension are added.
### Does an F1 chassis have to pass crash tests?
Yes. Every new chassis must pass a full FIA homologation programme covering front, rear and side impact tests, roll hoop and halo load tests, and chassis squeeze tests.
### Can a team change the chassis during a season?
Only within the FIA-approved specification. A damaged monocoque can be replaced with an identical unit. Modifications to the chassis geometry require fresh FIA sign-off and are rarely done mid-season.
