Dirty air was the sport's biggest single problem for a decade, and the 2022 regulations were rewritten around fixing it. ## What is dirty air in Formula 1? Dirty air describes the wake of vortices, low-pressure zones and unsteady flow that a Formula 1 car leaves behind it. Every component that generates downforce also produces wake. On a wing-led car the front wing, bargeboards, rear wing and diffuser all contributed. The car behind runs into that wake, and its own aerodynamic surfaces stop working correctly the moment they enter it. ## How dirty air hurts the following car When a car enters the wake of another it typically experiences: - reduced front-wing downforce, leading to understeer into corners; - disturbed floor pressure, reducing overall grip; - hotter cooling flow, forcing lift-and-coast if temperatures climb; - increased tyre stress from sliding, which accelerates degradation; - a car that is harder to place accurately and more punishing on the driver. ## Why 2022 changed the picture Under the pre-2022 regulations, following at one car length could cost roughly 35 per cent of the following car's downforce. The 2022 ground-effect rules were designed to shift downforce generation to the floor, whose wake is smaller and less disruptive, and to shape the rear wing endplate flow so it rolls up cleanly instead of spreading outward. The FIA published targets that reduced the downforce loss to about 20 per cent at the same distance. In practice cars can now follow more closely, though clean air is still the fastest place to be. ## Dirty air, tyres and strategy A stint spent in dirty air punishes the driver twice, on lap time and on tyre life. Engineers respond with strategy tricks: undercuts to release the driver into clean air, planned cool-down laps to reset tyre temperatures, and radio calls asking the driver to sit further back to protect the tyres for a later attack. ## Frequently asked questions about dirty air ### What is dirty air in Formula 1?
