A pit board is a rectangular sign, held out over the pit wall by a team member, showing lap-count, position, gaps, tyre calls or coded instructions to the driver as they pass. Modern boards use interchangeable magnetic panels or digital LED displays, but the concept is unchanged from the sport's earliest days: give the driver a compact summary they can see in a glance. ## What a pit board typically shows - current race position; - lap number or laps remaining; - time gap to the car ahead and behind; - tyre or fuel instruction codes; - coded team messages that only the driver and engineers understand. ## Why the pit board still matters Modern F1 has team radio, coded messages, cockpit dash displays and Race Control text messages. Yet the pit board persists because: - a physical sign is unmistakable and cannot be misheard on a scratchy radio; - it delivers a full information payload in one glance; - it is a fail-safe if radio communication drops; - drivers who prefer minimal radio traffic can still get the information they need. ## Frequently asked questions about the pit board ### What is a pit board in F1?
