# Parc Fermé

[![Formula 1 car under parc ferme conditions after qualifying](https://www.f1-fansite.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/SI202210230789_hires_jpeg_24bit_rgb-330x220.jpg)](https://www.f1-fansite.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/SI202210230789_hires_jpeg_24bit_rgb.jpg)

Once a car leaves the pit lane in Q1, its set-up is effectively frozen until the lights go out on Sunday.

**Parc fermé, French for "closed park", is the mechanism that guarantees the car that qualifies is the car that races.** From the moment a Formula 1 machine leaves the pit lane for the first time in Q1, an FIA scrutineer effectively takes ownership of it. Teams can still push the car, warm the fluids and change the tyres, but they cannot rebuild it around a hunch about Sunday's weather. That single principle sits behind some of the most important strategic and technical decisions in the sport.

## What is parc fermé in Formula 1?

Parc fermé is a regulatory state, not a place. It is defined in Article 40 of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations and locks the car into the specification it presented itself in during qualifying. FIA scrutineers monitor each garage throughout the period, and technical delegates can make unannounced inspections at any moment. The purpose is competitive fairness: without parc fermé, teams could set the car up for a headline qualifying lap and then transform it for the race, or vice versa.

## When does parc fermé apply?

The regulations are precise. A car is deemed to be in parc fermé **from the time it leaves the pit lane for the first time during qualifying**. If a car never leaves the pit lane in qualifying, it enters parc fermé at the end of Q1. The state continues until the start of the race, and after the chequered flag it applies again while the top finishers are held for post-race scrutineering.

On Sprint weekends the timing is different. Parc fermé now kicks in at the start of **Sprint Qualifying (SQ1)** on Friday, applies through the Sprint race on Saturday, then is **lifted** between the Sprint and the regular Grand Prix qualifying session, and is **re-imposed** at the start of Q1 for the main race. This mid-weekend window was introduced in 2024 to give teams a chance to react to what they learned in the Sprint before locking in for Sunday.

## What can be changed under parc fermé?

The list of legal work is short and tightly controlled. Under standard parc fermé, mechanics may:

- change tyres and adjust tyre pressures within the mandated window;
- bleed the brakes and top up fluids;
- adjust the **front wing flap angle** using the standard adjuster, but not swap to a different wing assembly;
- fit engine covers, install starter batteries and perform other non-performance service tasks;
- drain and re-add fuel for weighing purposes with FIA supervision.

## What is forbidden under parc fermé?

The whole point of parc fermé is to lock the car's performance envelope. Under Article 34.6 of the Sporting Regulations, a team may not modify any part on the car or make changes to the set-up of the suspension while it is held under parc fermé conditions. In practice that means no adjustments to ride height, suspension geometry, camber, toe or roll bars, and no swap of aerodynamic parts beyond the front wing flap angle. Any deeper work requires explicit permission from the FIA technical delegate, and permission is rarely given without a documented reason.

## The "change in climatic conditions" exception

If Race Control declares a **change in climatic conditions** between qualifying and the race, parc fermé is partially liberalised. Teams are then allowed to modify brake ducts, radiator ducts and to cover or uncover the pitot tubes used for aero measurement. The declaration is only made when the FIA agrees that the on-track conditions differ meaningfully from those in qualifying, most often when heavy rain follows a dry qualifying session or vice versa. Set-up (suspension, ride height, aero angles beyond the front wing) still cannot be touched.

## Parc fermé on Sprint weekends

Under the current Sprint format, six weekends of the season feature a Sprint race on Saturday. From 2023 the parc fermé rule locked teams into a single set-up from Sprint Qualifying on Friday all the way to the end of the Grand Prix on Sunday, which meant a compromise chosen for both formats. For 2024 the FIA and F1 Commission agreed to relax the rule: parc fermé still applies from the start of SQ1 through the Sprint, but teams can then work freely on the car between the Sprint and the start of regular Grand Prix qualifying. Parc fermé is re-imposed the moment the car leaves the pit lane for the first time in Q1.

## What happens if a team breaches parc fermé?

The consequence is designed to be sharp enough to deter any calculated risk. If a team is found to have modified the car outside the permitted work while it was under parc fermé, that driver must start the race **from the pit lane**. In practice teams sometimes accept this penalty deliberately, using the pit-lane start as an opportunity to change the car's configuration for a wet race or to fit a fresh power unit component that would otherwise trigger a grid drop. Breaches also require the driver to complete a formation lap from the pit-lane exit before the grid start, which further limits the strategic upside.

## Frequently asked questions about parc fermé

### What does parc fermé literally mean?

Parc fermé is French for "closed park". Historically it referred to the secure enclosure where cars were held under scrutineering conditions at a race meeting. In modern F1 the term describes the regulatory state, not the physical location, but the principle is the same.

### When does parc fermé start in a Formula 1 weekend?

Parc fermé begins the moment a car leaves the pit lane for the first time in Q1 of qualifying. On Sprint weekends it starts at the beginning of Sprint Qualifying (SQ1) on Friday. If a car does not run at all in qualifying, it enters parc fermé at the end of Q1.

### Can teams change the set-up between qualifying and the race?

No. Suspension, ride height, aerodynamic bodywork (beyond the front wing flap angle) and other performance elements are locked. Only tyre changes, brake bleeding, fluid top-ups, front wing flap adjustments and other minor service tasks are allowed.

### What is the penalty for breaking parc fermé rules?

Any car that is worked on outside the permitted operations while under parc fermé must start the race from the pit lane. Teams occasionally accept this penalty deliberately when the pit-lane start offers a strategic benefit, for example when switching to a wet-weather set-up.

### What is the change in climatic conditions rule?

If Race Control formally declares a change in climatic conditions between qualifying and the race, teams may adjust brake ducts, radiator ducts and pitot tube covers. Deeper set-up changes remain forbidden. The declaration is typically triggered by a swing between wet and dry weather.

### Does parc fermé apply during Sprint weekends?

Yes, but the current 2024 format allows a window of relief. Parc fermé applies from Sprint Qualifying on Friday through to the end of the Sprint race on Saturday, is lifted between the Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying, and is re-imposed at the start of Q1 for the main race until the Sunday start.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"What does parc ferme literally mean?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Parc ferme is French for closed park. Historically it referred to the secure enclosure where cars were held under scrutineering conditions at a race meeting. In modern F1 the term describes the regulatory state, not the physical location."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"When does parc ferme start in a Formula 1 weekend?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Parc ferme begins the moment a car leaves the pit lane for the first time in Q1 of qualifying. On Sprint weekends it starts at the beginning of Sprint Qualifying (SQ1) on Friday. If a car does not run at all in qualifying, it enters parc ferme at the end of Q1."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Can teams change the set-up between qualifying and the race?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No. Suspension, ride height, aerodynamic bodywork (beyond the front wing flap angle) and other performance elements are locked. Only tyre changes, brake bleeding, fluid top-ups, front wing flap adjustments and other minor service tasks are allowed."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What is the penalty for breaking parc ferme rules?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Any car that is worked on outside the permitted operations while under parc ferme must start the race from the pit lane. Teams occasionally accept this penalty deliberately when the pit-lane start offers a strategic benefit."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What is the change in climatic conditions rule?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"If Race Control formally declares a change in climatic conditions between qualifying and the race, teams may adjust brake ducts, radiator ducts and pitot tube covers. Deeper set-up changes remain forbidden."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Does parc ferme apply during Sprint weekends?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Yes, but the 2024 format allows a window of relief. Parc ferme applies from Sprint Qualifying on Friday through to the end of the Sprint race on Saturday, is lifted between the Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying, and is re-imposed at the start of Q1 for the main race until the Sunday start."}}]}
