A race engineer is the lead engineer responsible for one Formula 1 car and its driver during a race weekend. They lead all setup discussions, sit on the pit wall during every session, are the primary radio voice to the driver, and coordinate every performance decision affecting that car. They report to the head of race engineering, and coordinate closely with the strategy team, tyre engineers and performance engineers. ## What a race engineer does across a race weekend - **Friday:** plans and runs FP1 and FP2, gathers data on the setup and the tyres; - **Saturday:** refines setup for FP3, then runs the qualifying strategy on radio; - **Sunday:** runs the race from the pit wall, coaching driver behaviour, managing pit-stop timing and coordinating any repair calls; - **Debriefs:** chairs post-session meetings with the driver and engineers; - **Between events:** works with the driver and simulator team on preparation for the next Grand Prix. ## Iconic driver-engineer partnerships Some race-engineer partnerships have defined eras. Peter Bonnington ran Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for over a decade, including six drivers' titles. Gianpiero Lambiase has run Max Verstappen at Red Bull since 2016 and through all his championship years. Rob Smedley's partnership with Felipe Massa produced years of classic radio exchanges.
