Straight mode is the engine and hybrid map programmed into the ECU for maximum-speed use on long straights. It typically calls for full ICE combustion output, full MGU-K deployment, and priority MGU-H harvesting from the exhaust so the Energy Store refills for the next braking zone. On the steering wheel it usually sits under a rotary map switch, alongside quali mode, race mode and defensive maps. ## How straight mode fits into modern F1 power management - drivers select straight mode a few metres before a long straight begins; - the ECU switches ICE calibration, MGU-K deployment profile and MGU-H harvest strategy in one command; - the driver then holds throttle wide open through the straight; - at the end of the straight the driver switches back to a corner or defensive map; - the strategist watches the switch through telemetry to confirm the plan is being followed. ## Qualifying mode versus straight mode These two are often confused. **Qualifying mode** is a full-lap high-power setting typically used only in Q3 and specific race attack windows. **Straight mode** is a per-straight setting used many times per lap during a race. Qualifying mode consumes electrical energy far faster than a race stint can afford; straight mode is designed to be sustainable for a whole race. ## Frequently asked questions about straight mode ### What is straight mode in F1?
