Three races, two philosophies. Pirelli goes softest for the street circuits at Baku and Singapore, then steps back a notch for an abrasive Sepang not resurfaced since 2017. Pirelli has informed the teams which compounds will be available for the triple-header that opens with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the end of September and closes with the Singapore Grand Prix in early October. Baku and Singapore are both street races, and both get the softest trio in the range: C3 as the Hard, C4 as the Medium and C5 as the Soft. The odd one out sits between them. The Bahrain Grand Prix, held at Sepang from 2 to 4 October, gets C2, C3 and C4 instead. ## Why Sepang hosts the Bahrain Grand Prix The name is not a misprint. Formula 1 and the FIA confirmed in July that Malaysia would join the [2026 calendar](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-calendar/2026-f1-calendar/) as host venue for the Bahrain Grand Prix, slotted between Azerbaijan and Singapore, with the rest of the season unchanged. The agreement involves Bahrain allowing its race to be run elsewhere rather than lost altogether. "We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026," Stefano Domenicali said. "Once again, the sport has demonstrated its ability to adapt, find solutions, and deliver." FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem framed it as a collaboration, saying he was "incredibly proud" of the arrangement that would let Malaysia host the race "at the iconic Sepang circuit later this year". Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa referred to "ongoing regional challenges" in the official announcement. ## Nine years since F1 last raced there Sepang joined the calendar in 1999 and dropped off it after 2017, when [Max Verstappen](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/max-verstappen-information-statistics/) won what was then assumed to be the circuit's farewell. Nobody on the current grid has raced a car of this generation there, and the track surface has aged in the meantime. That is the crux of the compound decision. "The asphalt in Kuala Lumpur is particularly abrasive and has not been resurfaced since the last Formula 1 race held there in 2017," Pirelli noted, adding that the Malaysian circuit "places medium levels of stress on the tyres relative to the scale encompassing all tracks on the championship calendar". ## What the compound step actually changes It helps to remember that Hard, Medium and Soft are relative labels, not fixed products. The 2026 dry range runs from C1, the hardest, to C5, the softest, with no C6 after that compound was dropped for this season. Pirelli nominates three of the five for each weekend, and the hardest of that trio becomes the white-walled Hard whatever its absolute number. Going one step softer than the hardest available set shortens stint length and cuts the lap time advantage a hard tyre would otherwise hold. Do that and a two-stop race moves closer to a one-stop on total race time, which is exactly the outcome Pirelli named: the choice is "aimed at reducing the lap time differential between a one-stop and a two-stop race, thereby encouraging a wider range of potential race strategies". At Baku and Singapore the problem is the opposite one. Smooth, low-grip street asphalt asks less of the [tyres](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-tyres/), so the question there is getting temperature into the rubber rather than making it survive. ## A marker on the road to 2027 Narrowing the gap between strategies is not a one-off idea for Sepang. It is the same reasoning Pirelli has given for keeping five compounds in 2027 and rescaling them rather than adding a sixth, work that is being signed off now through a prototype test programme running across the [2026 season](https://www.f1-fansite.com/2026-formula-1-season/). Pirelli remains F1's sole supplier through the end of 2028, so these are the levers the sport will be pulling for a while yet.
