Once a blister opens up, that section of the tyre starts shedding rubber in chunks, grip drops sharply and vibration builds. ## What is tyre blistering in Formula 1? Blistering is a heat-induced tyre failure. Internal temperature in the tread compound climbs to the point where the rubber softens, releases gas and locally separates from the underlying tyre structure. From the outside a driver sees bubbles or torn patches, and the tyre's grip falls off cliff-fashion rather than gradually. Left unchecked, a badly blistered tyre can force a pit stop earlier than the strategy called for. ## What causes blistering? Blistering is almost always the result of the tyre being run too aggressively for the surface it is on. Common triggers include: - tyre pressures set too low, letting the carcass flex and heat up; - compound chosen too soft for the ambient and track temperature; - hot track surface, especially abrasive resurfaced circuits; - long stints that push the compound past its designed working window; - driver style that overworks a specific corner of the car. ## Blistering versus graining Blistering and graining are the two failure modes tyre engineers most often reference, and they are not the same thing. Blistering starts inside the tyre from too much heat. Graining is a surface phenomenon, where the tread tears itself into thin ribbons because the compound is too cold and slides too much across the road. Both cost the driver grip, but the fix is opposite: a blistered tyre needs cooling, a graining tyre needs to be worked harder until the surface temperature comes up. ## How teams manage blistering Engineers adjust starting tyre pressures, coach the driver on how hard to push the affected corner, and sometimes change race strategy to bring a stop forward. Pirelli publishes minimum pressures for every event, and the FIA polices them exactly so that no team can gain performance by running below the safe floor. In practice much of the blistering avoidance work is done long before the race, in tyre choice and setup direction across Friday practice. ## Frequently asked questions about blistering ### What is tyre blistering in F1?
