# GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers Association)

**The Grand Prix Drivers' Association, GPDA, is the collective voice of Formula 1 drivers on matters of safety, sporting regulations and driver welfare.** Founded in 1961, disbanded during the 1980s and revived in 1994 after Ayrton Senna's death, it is the mechanism through which the drivers speak to the FIA and Formula One Management as a single body rather than as individual competitors.
## What is the GPDA?
The GPDA is a private association of currently active Formula 1 drivers, organised as a not-for-profit and administered from a small office. Membership is voluntary and open to any driver holding a current F1 Super Licence. The Association elects a small board, typically featuring a chairman, one or two directors and a legal counsel, and speaks on behalf of the drivers on topics that affect them all.
## History
The original GPDA was founded in 1961 as a driver safety body during a particularly dangerous era of F1. It became inactive during the 1980s and was refounded in 1994 in the wake of the Imola weekend that killed Roland Ratzenberger and [Ayrton Senna](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/ayrton-senna-da-silva/). That refoundation has been credited as one of the drivers behind the modern F1 safety programme, from HANS devices to the halo and beyond.
## What the GPDA does
- **Safety review:** circulates issues about circuits, marshalling and car safety to the FIA;
- **Regulation feedback:** issues public and private positions on sporting and technical rule changes;
- **Drivers meetings:** the pre-race Drivers Briefing at every Grand Prix is where the FIA hears these views directly;
- **Public statements:** occasional open letters or joint press releases on topics that unite the field;
- **Legal support:** retained counsel available to advise drivers on FIA and contractual matters.
## Recent GPDA interventions
Modern GPDA statements have covered driver conduct standards, the safe distance behind cars in reduced-visibility conditions, penalty consistency and even race scheduling. The Association's letter of April 2015 pressing the FIA and F1 to make decisions collectively rather than politically is often cited as an early public example of a collective driver voice on sporting governance.
