A front-row start hands a driver an enormous strategic advantage. A grid drop for a power-unit change can bury a race even before the lights go out. ## What is the grid in Formula 1? The grid is the pre-race starting formation of 20 F1 cars on the main straight, arranged in ten rows of two staggered slots. Each slot is painted onto the tarmac and marked with a number from 1 to 20. Pole position (P1) sits on the "clean" side of the track, the side offering the most rubbered-in grip at the exact starting spot, though the choice of clean side sometimes shifts between circuits depending on prevailing racing lines. ## How the grid is set The starting grid is set by qualifying, run on Saturday afternoon in a three-part knockout format (Q1, Q2, Q3). Pole position goes to the fastest driver in Q3. Grid places 11 to 15 are set by Q2 order, and places 16 to 20 by Q1 order. On Sprint weekends the Grand Prix grid is still set by Saturday's traditional qualifying, while the Sprint race grid is set by a separate Sprint Qualifying session on Friday. ## Grid penalties - power-unit component changes over the season allocation trigger drops of five, ten or more places; - sporting infractions such as impeding or dangerous driving can carry three to five-place penalties; - a serious offence in the previous race can add further places; - heavy accumulations can send a driver to the back of the grid; - an even more severe outcome is a pit-lane start, taken from the pit exit after the field has cleared the grid. ## Standing start versus rolling start Grands Prix are almost always started standing, with the field stationary on the grid at engine-off idle. The five red lights sequence at the top of the gantry counts them off, and the race begins when all five lights extinguish together. A red-flag restart may be a standing restart from the grid or a rolling restart behind the Safety Car, depending on Race Direction. ## Frequently asked questions about the F1 grid ### What is the F1 grid?
