A lock-up occurs when the driver over-brakes, exceeds the tyre's available grip and the wheel skids rather than rolls. Modern F1 cars have no ABS, so the responsibility to modulate the brake pressure sits entirely with the driver. Once a wheel is locked, the friction between rubber and road heats the tyre unevenly and can wear a flat patch into the tread. ## Why lock-ups happen - brake bias set too far forward for the corner conditions; - cold tyres early in a stint or after a Safety Car; - reduced downforce in dirty air, making the tyre easier to lock; - optimistic braking into a corner while chasing a rival; - brake temperatures below the working window; - damp patches or debris on the track surface. ## The flat spot problem The most serious consequence of a lock-up is the flat spot it leaves on the tyre. That flat patch turns every subsequent rotation into a hammer blow on the suspension. Vibrations become severe enough to affect steering, brake pedal feel and even the driver's vision. In extreme cases teams pit early just to change a flat-spotted tyre. Cover a flat spot with fresh rubber over a couple of laps and it can partially recover, but most bad flat spots are terminal for the tyre. ## How drivers avoid lock-ups Modern drivers use the brake bias switch on the steering wheel to dial bias rearward before slow-speed corners and forward for high-speed braking zones. They release the pedal fractionally the moment they feel a wheel lock, then reapply. They also coach themselves through corners where they know the risk is high, especially at Bahrain Turn 1, Silverstone Village and Monza Turn 1. ## Frequently asked questions about lock-ups ### What is a lock-up in F1? A lock-up is when a wheel stops rotating under braking while the car continues to move, sliding rather than rolling. It leaves a black mark and a flat spot on the tyre. ### Why is a lock-up bad? Because the flat spot it leaves causes severe vibration through the suspension and steering, damages the tyre's balance, and can force an early pit stop. ### Do F1 cars have ABS? No. Anti-lock braking systems are banned in Formula 1. The driver is entirely responsible for modulating brake pressure. ### Can a flat-spotted tyre recover? Sometimes, if the driver carries on and covers the flat spot with fresh rubber. Bad flat spots do not recover and usually force a pit stop. ### How do drivers reduce the risk of a lock-up? They adjust brake bias per corner, release and reapply the pedal at the first sign of a lock, and warm the tyres and brakes carefully in the opening laps.
