# Marshal
Marshal waves red flag as Sergio Perez, Racing Point RP20 passes by
**Marshals are the volunteer trackside workforce that makes a Formula 1 race possible.** They wave the flags, clear stranded cars, deploy fire equipment when necessary, and manage everything from spectator safety to pit-lane crossings. Every [FIA](https://www.fia.com/)-approved circuit has hundreds of them, and the sport could not run for a single Sunday without them.
## What is a marshal in F1?
A marshal is a trained volunteer authorised by the FIA and the host national motor-sport federation to work trackside during a Grand Prix weekend. Marshals are stationed at every marshal post around the circuit, at pit-lane crossings, at the grid, at the medical intervention points and at all major gates. They wear distinctive orange or red overalls depending on their role and undergo formal training programmes to be allowed to work at an FIA event.
## What marshals actually do
- **Flag signalling:** waving the yellow, blue, red, black and chequered flags as directed by Race Control;
- **Incident response:** recovering stranded cars, sweeping debris, deploying fire extinguishers;
- **Track hygiene:** clearing marbles and dust between sessions;
- **Grid marshalling:** guiding cars to their slots and clearing the grid before the start;
- **Pit-lane management:** policing pit exits, speed limits and safety zones.
## Training and hierarchy
Marshals begin at a novice level, doing spectator area or paddock work, and progress through observer, incident and post-chief roles as they log hours and pass FIA and national federation courses. A Chief Marshal at a major Grand Prix typically has more than a decade of experience. The FIA also runs an international marshal recognition programme that lets experienced volunteers travel to work at other Grands Prix.
## Marshals and safety
The role has evolved sharply after several tragic incidents. Marshal deaths at Melbourne 2001, Montreal 2013 and [Suzuka](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-circuits/suzuka-circuit/) 2014 all forced changes in the way recovery vehicles are deployed and how much protection marshals are given while working next to the track. The Virtual Safety Car, introduced for 2015, was designed specifically to reduce the risk of a fast car hitting a recovery operation.

### What does a marshal do in Formula 1?
Marshals wave the flags, respond to on-track incidents, recover cars, clear debris, guide cars on the grid and in the pit lane, and generally keep the sporting event safe.
### Are F1 marshals paid?
Most are not. The overwhelming majority of Grand Prix marshals are volunteers who train through their national motor-sport federation and work for the love of the sport.
### How do you become an F1 marshal?
Through the national motor-sport federation of your country. Most federations run a training ladder that begins with local racing and progresses to national and then international Grand Prix work.
### What colours do F1 marshals wear?
Orange is the most common colour for marshals' overalls, though certain roles wear red, yellow or white depending on the federation and event. The FIA sets a standardised colour code for the most safety-critical positions.
### Have marshals been killed at F1 races?
Yes. Marshal Graham Beveridge was killed at Melbourne 2001 by debris from a crash, and Mark Robinson was killed by a recovery vehicle at Montreal 2013. Jules Bianchi's 2014 accident, which struck a recovery crane, also involved marshals working on the track. Each of these incidents drove reforms to how the sport polices trackside work.
