The pit wall is both a physical structure and a working position. Physically, it is the low reinforced wall that runs the length of the pit lane, separating the working area from the racing surface. Functionally, it refers to the crew position mounted on top of that wall, a covered gantry containing rows of monitors, radios and telemetry screens where the team's senior race personnel sit throughout a session. ## Who sits on the pit wall - **Race engineers:** one per car, in direct radio contact with the driver; - **Strategy engineer:** running the pit-stop models and live decisions; - **Sporting director:** overseeing FIA compliance and cross-team decisions; - **Team principal:** observing and taking the biggest calls; - **Chief mechanic:** coordinating pit-stop crew status; - **Data engineers:** running the live telemetry channels. ## What happens on the pit wall during a session Every lap the pit wall watches sector times, gaps, tyre temperatures and fuel figures on multiple channels at once. Strategy engineers run continuous "what-if" simulations of pit-stop timing. Race engineers coach the driver, relay hazards and manage energy deployment on the radio. The team principal makes any final call that involves risk.
