# Active Suspension

[![Ayrton Senna getting a lift of Nigel Mansell on his Williams FW14B Renault (1992)](https://www.f1-fansite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/F1-Fansite.com-Ayrton-Senna-HD-Wallpapers_40-330x186.jpg)](https://www.f1-fansite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/F1-Fansite.com-Ayrton-Senna-HD-Wallpapers_40.jpg)

Ayrton Senna getting a lift of Nigel Mansell on his Williams FW14B Renault (1992)

**Active suspension is arguably the most consequential piece of technology Formula 1 has ever banned.** For a decade it took F1 from a compromise between low ride height and bump absorption to a car that stayed pinned to its ideal aerodynamic platform regardless of what the track threw at it. When Williams built its FW14B around the concept in 1992 the field was left playing catch-up, and by the end of 1993 the [FIA](https://www.fia.com/) had decided the technology was too dominant, too expensive and too safety-sensitive to be allowed to continue.

## What is active suspension in Formula 1?

Active suspension replaces conventional springs and dampers with hydraulic or electro-hydraulic actuators controlled by a computer. Sensors around the car measure ride height, wheel loads, chassis attitude and lateral acceleration. The control unit reads that data hundreds of times a second and drives the actuators to keep the car at the ride height and rake angle that produce peak aerodynamic performance. Instead of setting the car up as a compromise for one lap of a circuit, engineers set target platforms and the software met them everywhere.

## How active suspension worked

The heart of the system was a hydraulic actuator at each wheel, powered by a high-pressure pump driven off the engine. Wheel and chassis position sensors fed the control unit, which decided how much force each actuator should apply. In the strong version pioneered by Williams the actuators could raise the car for kerbs, lower it on straights to gain top speed, and stiffen it under braking. In the weaker "reactive" version used by early Lotus and other teams the system merely responded to what happened, without predicting or preemptively adjusting.

## Lotus 92: the first active F1 car

The first serious attempt at active suspension in Formula 1 was the Lotus 92, which raced at the Brazilian and Long Beach Grands Prix in 1983. Lotus chose to install the system on its Cosworth-powered chassis because Renault, its turbocharged partner at the time, was unwilling to commit an engine to an unproven concept. The result was fragile: hydraulic failures and computer signal glitches produced unpredictable handling, and [Nigel Mansell](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/nigel-mansell/) openly disliked the car. The system raced only twice that year before Lotus put the concept back on the workbench.

## Williams FW14B: the definitive active F1 car

Almost a decade later, Williams delivered the mature version. The Williams FW14B of 1992 was built around a fully active system derived from work by Automotive Products for road vehicles, and it dominated the championship in Nigel Mansell's hands. The system allowed the car to run at optimal ride height in every corner and on every straight, unlocking aerodynamic performance the passive competition could not match. Its evolution, the FW15C, won again in 1993 with [Alain Prost](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/alain-prost/). In two seasons Williams effectively wrote the reference book on how far active suspension could go.

## Why active suspension was banned for 1994

The ban was announced during the 1993 season as part of a broader package of restrictions on driver aids that also removed traction control, launch control and ABS. The FIA cited three concerns:

- **Cornering speeds:** active suspension was pushing lateral loads to levels the governing body worried about;
- **Cost:** the hydraulic hardware, sensor arrays and control software were beyond the reach of smaller teams and were widening the competitive gap;
- **Reliability and driver control:** if the system misbehaved, the car could become unpredictable, and the FIA wanted the driver back at the centre of the equation.

The 1994 ban ended F1's active-suspension era at its peak. The Williams FW16, built to the new passive rules, felt to its drivers like a step backwards in every metric except computer complexity, and much of the season's early controversy revolved around whether teams were still running hidden electronic assistance.

## Active suspension today

Formula 1 has kept active suspension out of the regulations ever since. Current cars use conventional springs, torsion bars and hydraulic third elements that are legal because they are not driver-controlled or predictive. Discussions have surfaced periodically about reintroducing a limited form of active ride to help ground-effect cars deal with porpoising, but as of the 2026 regulations the technology remains prohibited. Road cars, meanwhile, have inherited many of the ideas: adaptive air suspension and predictive damping systems on modern luxury cars draw a direct line to the work Lotus and Williams did in the early 1990s.

## Frequently asked questions about active suspension

### Which team pioneered active suspension in Formula 1?

Lotus pioneered active suspension with the Lotus 92, which raced at the Brazilian and Long Beach Grands Prix in 1983. The system was fragile and unpopular with the drivers, and it took another decade for Williams to turn the concept into a race-winning package.

### Which was the most successful active-suspension F1 car?

The Williams FW14B of 1992 is regarded as the definitive active-suspension F1 car. Nigel Mansell won the drivers' championship with it, and its evolution, the FW15C, delivered another title with Alain Prost in 1993.

### Why was active suspension banned?

The FIA banned active suspension for the 1994 season on cost, safety and driver-aid grounds. Rising cornering speeds, the widening competitive gap between wealthy and small teams, and concerns about unpredictable behaviour if the system misbehaved were the three main drivers of the decision.

### Is active suspension allowed in modern Formula 1?

No. Active suspension has been banned since 1994 and remains prohibited under the current 2026 regulations. Passive springs, dampers and hydraulic third elements are permitted, but any driver-controlled or predictive system is illegal.

### What is the difference between reactive and full active suspension?

A reactive system responds to changes in wheel and chassis position after they happen, while a fully active system uses sensor data and modelling to preemptively set actuator forces before the change occurs. The Williams FW14B ran the fully active version, while the original Lotus 92 was closer to a reactive setup.

### Do road cars use active suspension today?

Yes. Many modern premium road cars use adaptive or predictive suspension systems that trace their engineering lineage back to Formula 1 work in the early 1990s. Modern air-suspension and magnetic-ride systems adjust damping in real time based on road input, driver mode and camera-scanned road surface data.
