**The fuel rig was the gravity-and-pressure-fed pump used to refuel Formula 1 cars during pit stops from the 1990s through 2009.** Refuelling has been banned in F1 since the end of that season, so the rig is now a piece of history, but its short life produced some of the most spectacular pit-stop drama the sport has ever seen. The current F1 pit stop is tyres only, no fuel.

## What was the fuel rig in Formula 1?

The fuel rig was a mobile pumping unit that pushed fuel from a large storage container through a hose and coupling into the car's fuel cell during a scheduled pit stop. It was tightly regulated in flow rate, capacity and safety systems. The FIA capped the maximum flow at 12.1 litres per second across the refuelling era, which set the minimum length of a pit stop when a car needed a specific amount of fuel.

## Why F1 used refuelling

Refuelling was introduced for 1994 as a strategic mechanism, allowing teams to run lighter cars in shorter stints and turn strategy into a live spectator sport. It changed the character of the race: qualifying became a low-fuel exercise, races became stint-based, and undercuts and overcuts became central to strategy. It also produced regular fireballs when hoses stuck open or when hot fuel splashed onto exhaust systems.

## Why refuelling was banned

The FIA banned refuelling from the start of the 2010 season, citing cost, safety and racing character. The safety argument came after several rig failures over the years, most memorably Jos Verstappen's Benetton pit fire at [Hockenheim](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-circuits/hockenheimring/) 1994. The cost argument came from the specialist equipment and the logistics teams and manpower it demanded. The racing argument was that fuel-based strategy was replacing on-track battling. Since 2010, cars have started the race with full-race fuel loads and tyre changes have been the only work during pit stops.

## Modern pit stops without fuel

Without refuelling, a modern F1 pit stop is a pure tyre-change exercise. Elite pit crews now complete a four-tyre change in around 2.0 to 2.3 seconds, with the current world record held by McLaren at 1.80 seconds. The rig may be gone, but the choreography around it has been replaced by an equally intense ballet built around wheel guns and jack systems.
