# What is the halo in F1?

**The halo is the titanium safety structure introduced above the cockpit of every Formula 1 car for the 2018 season.** It sits in a Y-shape around the driver's head, tested to withstand 12 tonnes of vertical load, and has already been credited with saving multiple lives. It was controversial when announced, and it is unquestioned now.
## What is the halo in F1?
The halo is a mandatory FIA-designed cockpit protection device. It is a wishbone-shaped titanium frame bonded to the survival cell in front of and above the driver, forming a protective arch across the top of the cockpit opening. It weighs around 7 kg and is manufactured to a single, standardised specification by three FIA-approved suppliers.
## Why the halo was introduced
A decade of head-injury accidents drove the FIA to develop a serious cockpit protection solution. Felipe Massa's spring impact at Hungary 2009, Henry Surtees' death in an F2 race the same year, and Jules Bianchi's Suzuka 2014 accident all pointed at the same open-cockpit vulnerability. The halo was tested in various forms from 2015 and mandated from the start of the 2018 season, after significant driver, team and fan pushback.
## The 12-tonne test
The halo has to survive an FIA static load test of 116 kN (roughly 12 tonnes) applied vertically to its centre. That is equivalent to the weight of a London double-decker bus resting on the frame without deforming beyond a very small tolerance. It also has to survive lateral load tests and mounting-point tests, and be manufactured to a single specification across the grid.
## Lives already saved
Multiple incidents since 2018 have credited the halo with saving lives or preventing serious injury:
- **[Charles Leclerc](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/charles-leclerc-information-statistics/), Spa 2018:** Fernando Alonso's McLaren went airborne over Leclerc's Sauber; the halo took the direct hit;
- **[Romain Grosjean](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/romain-grosjean/), Bahrain 2020:** his Haas split a barrier at Turn 3, and the halo held back the top rail as the car buried itself;
- **Zhou Guanyu, Silverstone 2022:** his upturned Alfa Romeo skated over the gravel and dug into the tyre barrier, the halo taking sustained load throughout;
- **Hamilton and Verstappen, Monza 2021:** Verstappen's Red Bull ended up on top of Hamilton's Mercedes, and the halo bore the load through the impact.
## How the halo reshaped car design
The halo's introduction reshaped nose designs, roll-hoop geometry and driver ergonomics. Aerodynamicists initially treated it as a compromise, but by the 2019 season most teams had turned the halo into an aerodynamic asset, using its shape to condition flow over the sidepod inlets and the airbox.
