A turbocharger is a two-part device: a turbine driven by the exhaust gases, and a compressor mounted on the same shaft that forces intake air into the cylinders at higher-than-atmospheric pressure. The additional oxygen in the cylinder lets the engine burn more fuel per cycle, producing dramatically more power for the same displacement. On the current F1 power unit the turbo compressor sits on the intake side of the V6, and the turbine sits inside the exhaust manifold. ## Key facts about the current F1 turbo - single-turbo configuration, mandated between the V6 cylinder banks; - MGU-H mounted on the same shaft to harvest excess exhaust energy; - maximum boost pressure controlled through a wastegate; - rev limit of 125,000 rpm for the turbo shaft under the current rules; - homologated separately as one of the six power-unit elements. ## Turbo eras in F1 F1 has had two distinct turbo eras. The **first turbo era** ran from 1977, when Renault introduced the Renault RS01, to 1988, when the FIA banned turbo engines in favour of naturally aspirated V8s and V12s. Turbos returned for the 2014 hybrid regulations and have been mandatory ever since. The current single-turbo V6 is much more efficient than the earlier 1500-horsepower 1.5-litre turbos, though not as spectacular in the pit lane. ## Turbo and the MGU-H The MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit Heat) is what makes the modern F1 turbo unique. It sits on the turbo shaft and can generate electricity from excess exhaust flow, or spin the turbo shaft electrically when exhaust flow is low. The second mode effectively eliminates turbo lag, giving the driver throttle response indistinguishable from a naturally aspirated engine. The MGU-H is being removed for 2026, and turbo design will shift toward faster mechanical spool-up as a result. ## Frequently asked questions about the F1 turbocharger ### What is a turbocharger in F1?
