That small angle changes how the tyre lays its contact patch on the road under cornering load, and it is one of the most important set-up parameters an engineer can dial in. ## What is camber in Formula 1? Camber is measured in degrees from the vertical. A wheel that stands perfectly upright has zero camber. A wheel with its top leaning inward has **negative camber**. A wheel with its top leaning outward has positive camber. F1 cars almost universally run negative camber on both axles, typically around three to four degrees at the front and one to two degrees at the rear. ## Why F1 cars run negative camber Under lateral load the entire suspension geometry moves. In a fast corner the outside wheels compress, the sidewalls of the tyres deflect, and a wheel that started at zero camber would lift its inside edge off the road. Setting the wheel at a few degrees of negative camber to begin with means that, at maximum load, the tyre contact patch flattens out perfectly against the road. It is one of the biggest single sources of cornering grip a set-up engineer has. ## The trade-offs - **Cornering grip:** more negative camber generally means more grip in fast corners; - **Straight-line wear:** too much negative camber puts extra load on the inside shoulder of the tyre in a straight line, increasing wear and temperature there; - **Braking:** excessive camber reduces the effective contact patch under braking, hurting stopping distance; - **Tyre temperature:** the wrong camber overheats one edge of the tyre and cools the other, moving the tyre out of its optimal working window. ## Pirelli maximum-camber limits Because too much negative camber can trigger tyre failures at high-speed circuits, Pirelli publishes **maximum camber values** for every Grand Prix, front and rear. The FIA polices those limits during scrutineering. Silverstone, Spa and Suzuka are typical events where the camber cap is tightened relative to slower circuits, because the sustained lateral loads in the high-speed corners put the greatest stress on the tyre sidewall. ## Frequently asked questions about camber ### What is camber in F1?
