# Safety Car

**The Safety Car is the Formula 1 neutralisation device that gathers the field behind a pace car so that recovery vehicles and marshals can safely work on the track.** It is deployed by Race Direction when the hazard is severe enough to demand a physical bunching of the field, and it changes the shape of any race it is called into. Cars close up, gaps disappear, and the restart is where the action begins again.
## What is the Safety Car in F1?
The Safety Car is a road car with FIA-approved lighting, radio, and driving equipment that leads the field around the circuit at a controlled speed while a serious hazard is dealt with. In modern F1 the Safety Car is a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series or an [Aston Martin](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/aston-martin-f1-team-information-statistics/) Vantage, alternating depending on the season. The driver is Bernd Mayländer, who has held the role since 2000.
## How the Safety Car is deployed
- Race Direction decides a hazard cannot be handled with local yellows or a Virtual Safety Car;
- the SC leaves the pit lane and joins the track;
- overtaking is forbidden except in specifically allowed cases;
- the leader catches the SC and everyone else forms up behind;
- marshals and recovery vehicles clear the hazard;
- Race Direction announces the safety car is coming in, and a controlled restart follows.
## Restart procedure
The Safety Car in-lap is where drivers ready their cars: brake warmers off, tyre temperatures pushed up through weaving, energy management set to the launch map. The leader controls the restart pace once the SC leaves the track. Overtaking is only permitted after the leader crosses the safety car line, which sits before the first corner at most circuits.
## Safety Car versus Virtual Safety Car
The Virtual Safety Car (VSC) applies a delta lap-time speed limit to every car simultaneously without physically bunching the field, and is used for hazards that do not require recovery equipment on the racing surface. The full Safety Car is used when marshals need to be on the track, when weather conditions demand a controlled pace, or when a barrier needs to be repaired. Race Direction escalates and de-escalates between the two depending on the situation.
