Every start of every Grand Prix begins with it. ## What is the formation lap in Formula 1? The formation lap, sometimes called the parade lap, is a single lap of the circuit undertaken by the field before the race starts. It begins when the green light comes on at the end of the countdown, follows the direction of the race, and ends with the drivers returning to their grid slots. Cars are not racing during the formation lap, but they are also not free to do whatever they want: the FIA sets specific rules about pace, overtaking and returning to position. ## What drivers do on the formation lap - **Weave to heat the tyres:** a controlled, moderate weaving pattern to bring rubber up to temperature; - **Snap the brakes on and off:** to raise brake disc temperatures to their working window; - **Test the clutch:** repeatedly find the bite point that will be used for the launch; - **Check switch settings:** confirm all engine, differential and diff-clutch settings are on the launch map; - **Look at the track:** pick out the exact line for the run to Turn 1. ## Rules governing the formation lap Overtaking is not permitted during the formation lap. If a driver gets a poor getaway from the grid and is passed, the passing driver must let them back by before Turn 1. If a driver stalls or is unable to start, they raise their hand, mechanics push the car into the pit lane, and that driver serves a pit-lane start. Excessive weaving is monitored and can be penalised, and drivers must return to their designated slot for the standing start. ## Standing start versus rolling start Grands Prix are almost always started standing, meaning the field lines up in the grid slots, revs the engines, and launches when the five red lights go out. If a race is red-flagged and restarted from cold, the FIA may choose a rolling start behind the Safety Car. In that case there is no separate formation lap because the field is already following the Safety Car around the circuit. ## Frequently asked questions about the formation lap ### What is the formation lap in F1? To scrub the tyres and raise their surface temperature into the working window that will produce peak grip at the start. Modern F1 tyres cool quickly and need a full lap of preparation. ### What happens if a driver stalls on the grid? The driver raises their hand, marshals push the car to the pit lane and the driver serves a pit-lane start. The grid is closed off around them and the countdown continues with a formation lap for the rest of the field. ### What is the difference between a formation lap and a rolling start? A formation lap precedes a standing start with the field stationary on the grid. A rolling start follows the Safety Car around the circuit and is used for red-flag restarts or in exceptional circumstances.
