# Monocoque

**The monocoque is the single-piece carbon-fibre structure that forms both the chassis and the survival cell of a modern Formula 1 car.** It carries the driver, houses the fuel cell, integrates the front and side crash structures, and provides the mounting points for the engine, gearbox and suspension. It is the reason drivers can walk away from accidents that would destroy any other machine on the road.
## What is a monocoque in F1?
A monocoque is a structure that carries all its loads through its outer skin rather than through an internal frame. In Formula 1 the monocoque is a bathtub-shaped composite tub made from prepreg carbon-fibre sheets laid up around an aluminium honeycomb core. It is cured in an autoclave under heat and pressure, and once cured it is astonishingly stiff and light, typically around 30 to 35 kg for the tub itself.
## Monocoque construction step by step
1. a positive-shape master pattern is machined from a rigid material;
2. a female mould is taken from the master, in halves;
3. hundreds of individually cut prepreg plies are laid into the mould in a specific sequence;
4. an aluminium honeycomb core is bonded between inner and outer skins;
5. the assembly is vacuum-bagged and cured in an autoclave at temperature and pressure;
6. the two half-shells are bonded and machined to final tolerances.
## The survival cell
The monocoque is legally required to serve as the driver's **survival cell**. It must pass a suite of [FIA](https://www.fia.com/) static and dynamic tests before it can go racing: front impact, rear impact, side impact, roll hoop and halo loads, and chassis squeeze tests along the cockpit sides. Only after every test is passed does the FIA sign off the chassis type for the season.
## Monocoque and aerodynamics
The outer surfaces of the monocoque set the geometry that everything else on the car is built around. Since the 2022 regulations moved downforce toward the floor, the shape of the tub, the underside of the driver compartment and the sidepod boundary have become key aerodynamic decisions rather than purely structural ones.
