The VSC is a race-neutralisation procedure that instructs every driver to slow to a fixed delta lap-time set by the FIA. Cars do not physically bunch up as they do under a full Safety Car; each car keeps its position on track and its gap to the cars around it. Marshals can then work on a specific area of the circuit knowing that every car will pass through the affected sector at reduced speed. ## Why the VSC was introduced The Virtual Safety Car was introduced for the 2015 F1 season as a direct response to the Jules Bianchi accident at Suzuka on 5 October 2014. Bianchi lost control of his Marussia at the Dunlop Curve during double waved yellows and struck a recovery vehicle attending Adrian Sutil's Sauber. The FIA Accident Panel concluded that yellow flags alone did not enforce a uniform enough speed reduction near recovery equipment. The VSC was the procedural fix. ## How the VSC works - Race Control declares a VSC and messages all cars simultaneously; - a delta lap time is transmitted to every car's dashboard; - the driver must keep to that delta from the moment the VSC starts; - overtaking is forbidden, and gaps to nearby cars are effectively frozen; - marshals do their work under the reduced speeds; - Race Control ends the VSC and racing resumes without a physical restart. ## Difference from a full Safety Car A full Safety Car physically bunches the field behind a pace car and gives every driver a "free" pit stop at reduced time cost. A VSC keeps the field spread out, and the pit stop under a VSC still costs meaningful time relative to the racing cars, though less than a green-flag stop. Race Direction escalates from VSC to full Safety Car if the hazard demands slower speeds or a longer neutralisation. ## Frequently asked questions about the VSC ### What is the Virtual Safety Car in F1?
